The UPM Fray Bentos mill began operating in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, in November 2007. It is located on the bank of the River Uruguay 4 kilometres east of the city of Fray Bentos. It produces bleached short-fibre eucalyptus pulp suitable for manufacturing fine and magazine papers, carton and tissue paper.

The pulp is taken from the mill by barge to the deep-water port of Nueva Palmira for loading onto transatlantic vessels bound for Europe and Asia.

Forestal Oriental, a subsidiary of UPM, supplies the wood raw material to the mill. Around 70% of the raw material comes from its own plantations.

The mill utilises the best available technology. According to several studies, it will have no harmful impact on the environment. The operations employ several thousand people directly and indirectly.
